About Us

new

It was 1949 and industry was tooling up to meet post-World War II demand. Albert Spina opened the doors of his electric motor repair shop with the offering of good service and quality craftsmanship. Those commitments to resolving the needs of our customers first are two of the foundation stones upon which our business performs all these decades later. The third is technical expertise.

By listening first and knowing which questions to ask, we learn your expectations and priorities. Our main goal is to do all we can to empower your success.

The Executive Team

Albert Spina

Founder

Albert Spina came to Michigan from Pennsylvania in 1944. The tide of World War II had started turning the Allies way and the defense effort required more workers in the industrial cities like Detroit. Albert went to work at Jay Electric Company and quickly learned three things; how to fix electric motors, how to listen to what the customer is telling you, and the value of doing good work.

In the process, he built a company with wide-ranging expertise in the service and repair of electric motors and drives. Every weekday morning, Albert Spina still shows up at the company that bears his name and does whatever needs to be done. He was able to provide for Celeste. Two sons and a grandson manage various aspects of this true family business. His legacy will be carried on for years to come with Spina Electric’s reputation for great service and expert workmanship.

Paul Spina

President

Paul Spina came to work for his father at the age of 19 and literally started at the bottom cleaning restrooms, driving truck, and understanding the value that every employee brought to the overall operation. He learned the value of doing good quality work and how to treat your employees like family. The average employee has over 30 years experience and there is a wide range of expertise that keeps Spina Electric the region’s leader in electric motors and drives sales, service, and repairs.

Paul looks forward to coming to work every day because it is never boring. Detroit is making a comeback, technology is changing, and the industry is expanding. Spina Electric is expanding its service range into servos and has built a new test facility. Customers will soon have access to live video feeds and can observe the testing and servicing of their equipment. Paul envisions Spina Electric evolving with the technology and being a fundamental partner of industry in southeast Michigan for generations to come.

Timothy Spina

Vice President

Tim Spina started out to be a teacher and graduated from the University of Detroit-Mercy in 1973 with a double major in History and Economics. Following a two-year stint traveling around Europe, he returned and started teaching in a city high school. By 1978, joining the family business became the best career choice.

He is responsible for making sure that employees at Spina Electric have the most competitive compensation package in the area. The profit sharing and 401K keep good employees, but Tim sees it as an investment. Spina Electric’s competitive advantage is their experience, their craftsmanship, their commitment to quality standards, and their 24/7 customer service. Those facets are only possible with talented and invested employees.

Tim is also proud of the fact that Spina Electric was the first in their industry in Michigan to be certified to ISO standards by both an internal monthly audit and an independent annual audit. Tim’s goal is to have the marketplace continue to recognize and trust in Spina Electric’s experience and technical expertise.

John (JD) Spina

VP Accounting

JD Spina is Tim’s son and the third-generation in the business. He started at Spina Electric in 2004. The most important lessons he has learned from his father and his grandfather are the importance of loyalty and the future value of delivering quality service. With the electric motor becoming a commodity in the not too distant future, JD sees Spina Electric expanding to include increasing technical capabilities and advanced testing services.

History

In April of 1949, he married the love of his life, Celeste. Albert determined that he might have difficulty providing for her and their family the way he wanted while working at Jay Electric. Later that same year, he went to work with his brother, Roger. Albert soon purchased his brother’s interest in the company and began implementing his own ideas about doing business. He opened the doors of Spina Electric Company on Charlevoix Street in Detroit. He listened to what the customers said they needed and if he couldn’t do it himself, he found someone who could and persuaded them to work at Spina Electric. It may have cut into his personal profit at the time, but he was committed to the philosophy of putting the customer’s needs first. His decision paid dividends early. His first big account was the Budd Wheel Company and his longest continuous customer has been General Motors.

Albert Spina founded Spina Electric Company as a small, family owned and operated business providing specialized repair services to the automotive industry. That humble motor repair shop has now grown into an integrated solution provider for all Detroit area industries offering power equipment sales, service, repair and our unique and effective Predictive Preventive Maintenance (PPM) program. We also offer our personalized motor management program so that your operation never has to fear costly and extensive down time. We help you save time, money, and manpower. Our mission is to provide you with unmatched personalized service, quality craftsmanship, and the technical expertise to empower your business success.
